A lot of ETTA JAMES,s songs were the FIRST time CHESS did not blues up, usually Willie Dixon would shape a song , but when Lenn Chess heard ETTA he said Leave it was more organs keyboard, bass, piano , a light drum. N great back up singer FR different than the usual CHESS HIT Almost a pre- MOWTOWN sound,
There were slight horns etc but ETTA,S BLUES changed a style,of blues forever,
PINETOP PERKINs was a piano great n Im so lucky to have seen him TWo weeks prior to his passing at BB KNGS HOB in NYC a with Smemika Copeland... A Gentleman who could play piano like Hendrix did his STRAT !!!!
JOHN LENNON took many a piano ballads n turned em into Blues such as the song MOTHER...IMAGINE n so many others......Woman is the Nigger of the World.
Elton John had many a song that could be called blues Funeral for a friend,Candle in the wind, Daniels song, Boiwe with simp gas li,e Hero,s which featured BOWIE on Keyboard...... Bryan Ferry doing Lennons version of Jealous Guy
So many great keyboardist a Im probably leaving out some grets..Like IAN Mac of Faces 99 percent of the Doors songs were a form of Blues n all were lead by Keyboards.
Alecia Keys plays the blues now n then n the girl, can tear it up,with style, sold a hippies alike Carole skiing sung ,any a song that was blues but her blues ,
TO TRY n say who was the BEST is open to what era, style, n so many other thing, should a HIT record be considered great or the B side that was banished but sold more songs than the A side??
Brian Eno was a keyboard synth, mind blowing Glam artist, whose musical writing abilities were so far ahead of other he went solo n now just produces
Again in my PERSON OPINION a song is not the blues because it has that 1-4-5 theory, more that real easy tap on the floor stle that goes with a standard GCD riff but to me it becomes a BLUES SONG by the story it tells. Lots of ROCK n other style have no story just words,.. But the blues is usually something that was seen, felt n changed a person forever, it the way those suffering survive with their music...... They say I. Therapy letting it out is good for U, maybe that's why I've never neded therapy even for PTSD ad as I let all my anger out in song, every word, or reference zi made was something that happened, changed or hurt me deeply and to me that's whynthey call those songs the Blues.....
my 2 cents
