For anyone who happened to catch American Idol on this week's show, there was a suggestion by Harry Connick Jr. for a contestant to change up his arrangements to get away from the normal chord selection and use some colorful chords on his arrangement of "Moon River".
Any thoughts?

Was he talking about reharmonization or something else? That's usually beyond most singers.

That's interesting. I've never really watched AI. I do watch The Voice. It's not always obvious who has true musical knowledge vs. who are just good singers with an ear for arranging. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'd just like to know where some of these contestants are coming from.
I think when a contestant does a rearrangement of a tune, it can be interesting. But it's a fine line between "wow, you really made that your own" vs. "nah, you shouldn't have messed with the original." It can depend as much on the tune itself as what they do with it.

I know what you mean Joe. Most "rearrangements" seem to me to be simply a change in tempo or as Harry calls it - the groove. This years AI has had a couple of contestants who really changed the arrangements - (to your point) even to the extent that the judges criticized them for getting too far from the original. On one show, the contestants were given the task to perform (note - I didn't say "cover") a "standard"...one that had been a chart topper for an artist. Most paid respect to the original, adding some colorful runs, perhaps a change in tempo at a point, etc. One performer really changed the original - completely changing the melody, and tempo. Don't remember just what it was so it must not have been too memorable.
