Which instrument do you consider a better fit for jazz? Since I played cornet, of course I'm prejudiced. ;D
IMHO Bix is one of the greatest Cornet players of all time. (Sorry Wynton).

The last paragraph in the Wikipedia entry on the cornet is informative on the instrument in a jazz context: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CornetIn the sort of jazz I listen most to the only cornet player who comes to mind is Nat Adderley.

Thanks Bill. Yes, I guess the cornet is too mellow for post war jazz. Even though in reading thru your link, it appears Don Cherry plays cornet on OrnetteColeman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come".

As for the answer to your question, the musicians essentially made their choice. The trumpet largely replaced the cornet as the instrument of choice. Louis Armstrong led the charge in shifting from cornet to trumpet. There were a few, but not many, modern jazz players who continued to use the cornet often , notably Thad Jones and Nat Adderley.
