In your opinion, are the materials used in guitars today (acoustic or electric) inferior to those used prior to 1980?
If so, which ones are most inferior? Woods, electronics, metals, ...
I believe I can actually hear a difference between the Adirondack Red Spruce vs the Sitka spruce. Now I don't know about the telecaster bodies. They sound pretty close. But a lot of that may be the electronics.

I suspect by and large the materials used today are better. The quality of a 'beginner' guitar now is vastly superior to a 1960s beginner guitar. As for higher end instruments it's debatable whether what they use now is better, but I think a lot more thought goes into the choice of materials now than in the maker's heydays.
With the advent of computer controlled manufacture, I suspect the "craftsmanship" on most instruments is probably better now too.
I think vintage guitars often sound better, but mostly because the wood has had time to mature. Even some of the cheap & nasty old guitars get better with age (only some though...)
