Who is your favorite?
Mine is definitely Don Helm, legendary steel guitar player for Hank Williams' "Drifting Cowboys".

I forgot Jerry Douglas, but maybe he's more lap slide than steel per-se? I guess my American cousins can educate me here!

Good topic, JP.........I guess my favorite steel layer is the guy that was in Ricky Skaggs band when he first went country. I can't remember who he was though. I know, I know......you're sitting there mumbling to yourself saying "how the heck can that old fool, Steven B, claim this as his favorite steel player when doesn't even know the rascal's name?"......good point, I reckon. However, I do have my old age and senility to hide behind.....hehe
But "Banjur" busted it for me. I've always loved the sound of a dobro (it's a bluegrass thaing).....and Mr. Flux (Jerry Douglas) is one of, if not, the master of the instrument. But I came across this young'un Gavin Largent the can play the snot out of dobro. He has speed, he has tone, he really understand scales, and can almost make a dobro sound as if it is being "flat-picked" ----- yet using a "spark plug wrench" to fret with. Check out this short video of Gaven along with Michael Cleveland doing a live version of "Fisher's Hornpipe". (the violinist ain't all that bad neither...I really meant to say fiddle player but I didn't want to confuse Banjo since he lives o'er yonder 'cross the pond and is much more refined, educated, and smarter than this country bumpkin...lol) Later Steve SB

You folks are way ahead of me! Yep, ol' Jerry can sure pick a dobro. And those new names - Kelly Joe Phelps, Ben Harper, and Gavin Largent can pick with the best of them. Banjo (Steve), that Bobby Ingano playing a "Hawaiian Steel" reminded me that we called the steel players back in the early 40s, Hawaiian steel pickers.
Speaking of old timers, Bashful Brother Oswald who backed ol Roy Acuff was a great Dobro Picker.
Another of them great honky tonk pedal steel players was Don Davis. He was married to Anita Carter (Of the Carter Sisters fame) and played with many great names.
From his biography:
Here's a nice clip of George Morgan with Don Davis on pedal steel.

Another of names that we don't normally associate with the pedal steel, Jerry Garcia. Yep Deadheads, Ol' Jerry played a mean steel guitar.
