What can you say about Pink Floyd's "Animals"? One of my favorite Floyd releases. Always a treat to hear.

Recommended to me by "Kate" in the Grateful Dead thread. Thanks Kate! Some incredibly funky dead on the cover of "Dancing In The Street". Enjoying this one.

Tom, precisely what I've been playing in the 4Runner for the last couple days! DITS is a song that benefitted tremendously from the mellifluous, uptempo, disciplined play of the mid-to-late 70s - referred to disdainfully by some Heads as "disco Dead" - and which manifested most prominently after the band broke from studio in early 77 having recorded the album Terrapin Station under the regimented administration of producer Keith Olsen.
It precedes a paradigmatic rendition of the triad Help>Slipknot (which became an instrumental segue between these two)>Franklin's Tower. Hopefully, you've made it to the show's crown jewels: that uninterrupted second set tear that begins with Estimated and runs through epic versions of Eyes, Wharf Rat, Terrapin, and - finally - a powerful incarnation of Bonny Dobson's anti-nuke lament, Morning Dew. Glad you're enjoying it!
For everyone else wondering exactly what the heck we're talking about, here's the album's "Dancing..." track, and it's truly cosmic. In particular, check out Jerry's launch on lead at 3:37 into what basically becomes a 6-minute solo foray into the ether ending almost exactly at 9:37, after which Bobby (on rhythm) begins to corral the jam at 10:22 for transition back to the closing vocals beginning at 12:00...simply wonderful communication between all components; a classic musical dialogue!

While my internment at the office today was dominated by the classical selections discussed elsewhere, the commute belonged to the Dead and Road Trips Volume 1, Number 1, comprising 2 discs culled from 5 shows during the Fall '79 tour...IMHO, the beginning of the end began to clearly manifest in 1981 (and, indeed, "the show" was over long before the show was over...if ya know what I mean); however, impending doom was nowhere to be seen during the season's first frosts in late '79 as the Dead blazed a trail through New England, the Mid Atlantic, and the Great Lakes.
You know how I've proselytized about Spring 77, if not that year in general, yet, these excerpts demonstrate that the best of Fall 79 could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with even that epic annual chapter in the band's history. If you own it, or can access via streaming services, check out the remarkable jam in Jack Straw - which otherwise tended to be a conventionally staid entry in the set list; also, don't miss an epic Dancing...>Franklin's Tower combo, as well as the rippin' Shakedown and Terrapin>PITB./k
Edit (4/26): No need to create a new entry, but suffice it to say that, for a Head who rotates a large collection continuously, this disc is STILL in the 4Runner's CD player 72 hours (and 2 complete listens) later...
Edit #2: ...but it's sharing time with Morphine's "At Your Service" which, honestly, showcases a plethora of Sandman arrangements that would be equally apropos among sessions of the Glenn Miller band, the Count Basie Trio, the Miles Davis sextet (think "Kind of Blue), or even bluesy Zeppelin!
Edit #3: Why can't I "like" Tom60's post RE: DiP3 more than once?

'if man is 5 and the devil is 6, then God is 7'! Might be one of the greatest rocknroll songs on one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded...I used to thank the stars for my apparent immunity to substance abuse addiction despite a tendency to binge across the spectrum of pharmacopeia as well as malt-based, carbonated, frosty beverages; then along came the Pixies...music is truly a drug, but narcotic? hallucinogen? amphetamine? barbiturate?...perhaps all? - this monkey's gone to heaven...
"Everything is gonna burn We'll all take turns, I'll get mine too"
I sense that tomorrow morning (or afternoon) is going to be one where I need a vertical control knob on the bathroom mirror... g'night you good people!/k
