Although I've never used one, I can see the advantage to having one when playing in a large venue with amplified instruments.
Has anyone used one before? And if so, are there large differences between monitors/brands?

Or if you need to hear the vocals or instruments that are electronic, like modern keyboards.
Most places I've played provided monitoring as part of the backline or PA. More sophisticated setups have a separate mixing board for monitoring vs. FOH. There can be many differences between the different speakers, even among the same brand as different size monitors have different dispersions. Look at the QSC K series for one example.
For some examples of these, look at threads about "powered speakers" on Keyboard Corner. A lot of us use a single or two powered speakers instead of those crummy Roland or Peavey keyboard amps.

Great point Joe. I hadn't considered the keyboard issue.
