Do you remember your first public appearance as a musician?
My first public gig was at a VFW in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. A local musician of note was looking for a band to perform behind him (he was a noted fiddler). We had a little school string band and of course we volunteered to play the VFW square dance every Friday for $3.00 per person. (Lots of money in the late 40s). All I had was my old Harmony Archtop guitar, but I showed up that Friday night, all smiles and wearing my Cowboy Hat and Boots, new set of Black Diamond strings and a pocket full of picks. Luckily, we did have some great talent in the band, and the gig stuck...even leading to a radio spot at 7:30 on Friday night.
Now my part in the beginning was to play a little rhythm guitar, but along the way I played a bit of Mandolin, did some squaredance calling, and even sang a song or two.

My first was in 1965. I was a bass player in a rock and roll band and we nabbed a gig to play a dance in Afton, Oklahoma. I made 10 bucks for that 4 hour gig.

I've come up in the world since then. Two years ago I was hired to play harmonica at 3 different places 1/2 hour at each place during the annual Elk Falls outhouse tour!! I got paid $25.00 for that gig.
