Posted this on the other forum and no reaction so far. Thought it was worth mentioning here.

Well, there are a TON of Buddy Rich videos on Youtube, mostly with his own band, which I tend to think are better than this. A very tough chart, taken at a very fast tempo and (probably) sight-read. These were some of the top musicians in the world and Buddy's own band played it better (but of course, they had seen it more than a few times). I am a huge Buddy fan, but he wasn't perfect (musically speaking that is; we know he had many other flaws which we don't need to mention). Sometimes (and I've noticed it on some of the youtube videos) he kicks off the tempo too fast. Such is the case here. What you get is a lot of sound and fury and not much music. My opinion of course.
But good to see and hear Lew Tabackin and Conte Candoli in the solo roles; also Ross Tompkins on piano.

Very interesting video, particularly for some of the reasons John mentioned. Back in the day, I saw Buddy on the Tonight show a number of times. Strictly in terms of Mr. Rich's playing, I don't think this is in the top rank of his Tonight appearances. OTOH, some of his more spectacular exhibitions on the show were (IMO) perhaps more drum pyrotechnics than band efforts. Disclosure: I respect Buddy's talent, but am not a really big fan.

I recall in a 60 Minutes television interview a few decades ago, Johnny cited Buddy Rich as one of his favorite drummers. I never quite got that. Considering a number of other jazz drummers I feel superior to Rich. But hey, that's just me. YMMV.

Judging from the frequency of Buddy's appearances and Johnny's on-air friendliness towards him, I'm not surprised. Honestly, the main reason I never got into Rich was all the Tonight appearances I saw. Even though I wasn't a big jazz fan at the time, I found Buddy too flashy for my taste and kind of a show-off. So I never seriously explored his music. Probably should check out a few more things...
