Best Humbucker Guitar Pickups:
The Humbucker is the one of the first pickups ever produced, and over 50 years later; it is still one of the most popular. In essence, the design has not changed one bit over the years; two coils that sit on top of a single magnet. Granted, there are certainly more than a few flavors of such, and the technology has advanced light years, but at the end of the day, it is still two coils on top of a magnet. This is not bad, it is good. Just like the "Etch-o-Sketch" or the AT&T Desk Phone some designs dont need too much fixin... they just work.
This is not to say that there are no great ideas out there that seriously alter the basic premise, there certainly are. But when you fire up your Les Paul, and the thick creamy howitzer-ejected tone comes blaring out of your 4X12, you are stroking those high-tension wires across two coils on top of a magnet. Below we have the best humbuckers available. Why are they the best? Because they take that simple concept and using the finest possible ingredients, spin things in a way that offer the best possible tone and performance. For those of you that prefer the more genre-specific products out there, we understand, this is a highly subjective discussion. But for those of you who are simply in the market for the best all around humbuckers that can cover a broad spectrum of styles and tones, walk this way.
Gibson 490T Modern Alnico II Humbucker Bridge Guitar Pickup Review
Gibson has reissued a classic product and hasn't screwed up like some reissues of recent history. This isn't the "PAF" but built upon the much-loved and highly-successful '57 Classic, this 490T places even more emphasis on the upper mids making it a good choice for anyone wanting the twang. The wax potting is also a nod to modern design as it virtually eliminates the microphonic squealing that is common amongst many of our cherished, yet not-potted vintage humbuckers. To spice things up more, the pickup comes with four-conductor wiring, which means that your tonal options are significantly increased, depending on how you choose to wire it. Available with chrome, gold, or nickel covers (or with open coils), these pickups are a terrific recipe for a rich humbucking tone.
