Blackboard Jungle (The Movie) opened the eyes of a lot of people to Rock and Roll. Bill Haley and the Comets - "Rock Around the Clock".
Not necessarily the first or second R&R record, but one of the great eye-openers.

Many will argue this isn't Rock and Roll but in 1955 this song along with many of The Platters songs were on the R&T charts.

"Americana". Somewhere else in some discussion I brought up that there's a CBC station I tune into (living in the Detroit area, Windsor Ont. and other Canadian stations are in easy reach) that plays what WE call "Americana" but by all Canadian artists. I wondered what THEY call it in Canada, or possibly "Americana" covers ALL of NORTH AMERICA? I don't know, but it got me wondering. Whitefang I reviewed a pretty good rootsy country album by Australians Michael Meeking & The Lost Souls, and referred to it as "Americanberra", which they and their PR man liked. Maybe the stuff from north of the Lakes (nearly all of The Band, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen etc etc) could be called "Americanada" just to avoid any confusion and potential regional offence?

We could spend hours having fun with this. For instance, since the one similarity Canada and the United States has is that most of the NON indigenous population of BOTH countries is made up of various European immigrants, and most of that music is an amalgam of what was BROUGHT OVER with them, maybe it should be referred to as "Europeana" So I guess "roots" is the simplest way to put it. And since both Canada AND The United States are (supposedly) democracies, if anyone wishes to ditinguish between AMERICAN "roots" music, and CANADIAN "roots" music, then they are free to do so. But then, as previously stated, there's not really too much if any difference in how they SOUND. Just like there's no real difference in the taste of the shredded fermented cabbage the Germans call "sauerkraut" and the Polish call "kapusta", but neither claim what the other calls it is wrong. Fats Domino was considered one of the Rock and Roll pioneers around my hometown in the 50s.
But this one was the song that solidified Fats as a great R&R artist

OK. I have to break down and post some Elvis. I'll start with a "Country" rockabilly song - "You're Right, I'm Left, She's Gone"
Then "Good Rockin' Tonight" - Another Rockabilly that set the stage for rock and roll
But then he moved to RCA - Nashville and recorded the hit that really put him on the charts as Rock and Roll

I suppose another testment to rock'n'roll's longevity is that I noticed, while driving home recently from the store, I passed by a house next block over from mine and noticed a collection of four kids( none looking more than 16) gathered in the garage, one guy holding what looked like a Strat, another with some kind of semi-hollow job, another kid at some kind of keyboard and the last one at a drum kit. I couldn't place the song they were playing, but it sounded like Rock'n'Roll to ME! Whitefang

+1 Fang. Did you sign them to a contract? Heck, one day they might be the next big band. Seriously, living here in the mountains of SW Virginia where the number of guitar players per capita exceeds any other place on earth, I hear some great music. We have a "Open Mic" sort of place in Floyd VA where every Friday night you can just show up and hopefully get on stage. Regardless, you can "warm up" outside and for me, that;s where you hear the best musci anyway. www.floydcountrystore.com/music/jamboreeNow, it ain't Rock and Roll, but what the hey!

Some of his stuff with Messina was good.... I'd say "Your Momma Don't Dance" is a low point for their songs... They did play some actual music.....

Today would have been Jim Morrison's birthday. In memory, one of the few Doors songs I actually like

I come and go with this band. There are some periods where I really enjoy them, and others (unfortunately more frequently lately) where I tire of them. That's not to say I don't appreciate their individual talents. Ray Manzarek is considered a keyboard god for good reason.
