The Good Old Days Jim Pate (June 15, 3018)
Whatever happened to summer nights Playing in the yard till dark? Kick the can or hide and seek Or watching the fireflies spark.
Mama and Daddy sitting on the porch Sipping on sweet ice tea Those were times when we were young And life was so carefree.
We didn't have the internet, Cell phone or cable TVs we didn't worry about gangs and such We were safe out on the streets.
We rode our bikes, skinned our knees And swam in the local creek But each of us had chores to do For a dime at the end of the week
The radio was there for me When I came in from school Captain Midnight, Superman, Gene Autry was really cool.
Ovaltine, decoder rings, Listening to the serial shows Baseball games, Friday night fights All heard in the radio
On Saturday, when work was done Daddy took us to the barber shop. While Mama shopped for the weekly needs The “Picture Show” was my stop
Come Sunday morning it was off to church Sunday school with all my friends. After church, a great big lunch Ice cream at the end.
Yes, those were such a happy time Even though the years were hard Depression, War and growing up Right there in our backyard
