My band has been invited to play at this event for a foreign affair matchmaker company. We usually play alt-rock songs, both original compositions and covers, but I suppose we gotta tone it down a bit for a socials event. I know it seems like we’re selling out, but we have to be realistic here. Our band needs the money to finance our studio time, plus other expenses for our equipment. What music should my band play? I need suggestions in the form of musicians or bands that would fit in with this type of event. Thanks!

Hard question. A band I was with some 20 years ago played at a wine café for a Christian singles mixer and ended up having underwear tossed on stage and some parking lot hookups no doubt. Early rock and roll ala Chuck Berry, Ike Turner, and TBone Walker, and blues with a touch of female jazz singers thrown in. Those folks came unglued after the first set no doubt thanks in part to the generous application of the grape to young psyches.
As for "selling out", if you don't give an audience some stuff they recognize or relate to you're not doing your job imho. The duo I'm in with my wife, we have plenty of originals, some of which are similar to stuff the blues greats did. Which we intersperse between covers. So we generally please the crowd and also get our stuff out, maybe sell a CD here and there.
By the way we have a few alt-BLUES things we do as well.
Good luck!

Why did they hire you? Have they heard you play? You need to know what those who hired you expect. If they say, "just be you," do that. If they thought you sounded like such-and-such, you'll probably want to do that. Why don't you ask whoever asked your band to play?
