We're fast coming up on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. FIRST one, that is. On the PBS feature "American Experience" they had a focus on the space program, from beginning to the last moon mission ("Chasing The Moon") But I gotta tell you......... I've seen that film footage many times over the years since, but seeing it last night, in considering it's significance at this point, brought the first moments back to me in a rush and I found myself in tears about it as much as when it ORIGINALLY happened 50 YEARS AGO! I haven't looked at the moon the same way since. Thoughts? Whitefang

So, no reaction by anyone when it occurred? Didn't impress anyone? 50 years (today!) since one of the greatest, if not THE greatest achievement of man's ingenuity, and no one has any recollection of their emotions at the time? Hard to fathom... Whitefang

Guess I missed seeing this post initially. I watched it then on TV the night it was broadcast. It was really something. We watched it at a friend's sister's apartment as she had the best TV we could find close by. I was living in the Pittsburgh area then and was age 20. I watched and read a lot of the recent shows and articles. It was good to see Moon Landing get this attention at age 50. The "American Experience" show was very good! Noticed also the various UFO and Alien shows upped their ante.

Our tv was terrible then but I tried to stay up and watch anyway. The newly released footage and all the background recently shown has been way cool.

Stay up? Wasn't that late when the telecast took place, as memory serves. My sister was still up, and since she was FIVE at the time, and Mom was strict about bedtimes, it couldn't have been on that late. Anyway... I recorded the whole thing. But back then it was AUDIO tape it was recorded on! Lord only knows what became of that reel. And I think there's still people who think it never really happened and that all that "actual footage" was done on a sound stage in Hollywood. My brother bought into that for a few years, but lacking any idea of a motive why that would be done, he resigned to it actually happening. Whitefang

For me at about 14, and used to being in bed early, it WAS late! Maybe 10 or 11 when we were seeing coverage. It may have been later footage of them on the surface jumping around etc. I knew it was a huge occasion and I was excited but the picture was so bad.

Heh! "Picture was so bad." I was amazed there was any picture at ALL! I was a week from 18 and engrossed in the whole space program since MERCURY. And after all those decades of sci-fi movies taking wild guesses of what landing on the moon would be like it was finally REALLY HAPPENING! I'm just wondering how disappointed those guys who always thought: "Whoever lands on the moon first will control the whole world!" must be when they discovered it wasn't so. Whitefang
