Here's a guy who showed there's more to rock bass than deep "bottom".

I have played in front of some good bass players, nobody "notable" but very good. Probably the most fun was a guy who showed up for an audition with a doghouse bass and bandages on a couple of fingers. We played a few songs and something flew across the room. One of his bandages! He'd played 2 nights with some rockabilly cats and shredded his fingertips. He was looking for something he could enjoy and not kill his digits so bad! Turned out to be a real good asset for our fledgling outfit until his new girlfriend made him choose between music and her. He caved, sad to say.
This is meant as a compliment, for both bassists and drummers, when I say that they are so in there that I don't know they are there.

"Doghouse bass" is a term I'm unfamiliar with. Is that another term for the big stand-up bass viola?
Which brings another familiar( to those of us at a certain age) bass man-----

Yes it is. Maybe a Texas term since that's where I first heard it.

Hm. Maybeeeeeeeeeeeeee the guy who worked in Grand Funk Railroad? The Who? Led Zeppelin? Who's the guy who did the Seinfeld theme? I saw Max Roach with his guys in the 90's and that bass guy was phenomenal.

Couldn't find anything on the Seinfeld guy. But this guy worked with Roach in the '90s---
This dude was in Grand Funk's original line-up....
The Who's JOHN ENTWISTLE------
And Zeppelin's JOHN PAUL JONES.....
And Jones actually was(is) a multi-instrumentalist, also handling keys and other instruments on many Led Zeppelin tracks for instance
