A bit after posting that clip of the jazz bagpipe player, I got to thinking( which sometimes can be dangerous ) about what other musical instruments we don't usually or typically associate with jazz HAS been used in that genre? for instance... Although tubas have been used(and sousaphones occasionally) in early jazz bands, they rarely(if ever) were given solo spots and just used for added bass effect. Go about 2 minutes into this clip for the solo. Can anyone else find something? Whitefang

Dorothy Ashby on harp (the big one with all the strings ) Dorothy also played harp on Stevie Wonder's "If It's Magic"?

And then some didn't need an instrument at all. Toots could have done well even without that guitar! Whitefang

Now Toots, I relate to. A jazz icon with a harmonica in the first place.

Back in the '70's a co-worker loaned me an album on which Toots does nothing BUT whistle. No guitar, no harmonica, but one tasty combo backing him up. Whitefang
