And actually, that Dylan tune(not an original of his) on the old vinyl LP and the CD reissue is titled "Highway 51" and not "Highway 51 Blues". For whatever reason all the YT clips title it with the "blues" added.

The original tune by pianist Curtis Jones is entitled 'Highway 51 Blues'(1938).As a matter of fact I was lucky enough to catch Curtis at the AFBF 1968. The Bob Dylan cover has more in common with Tommy McClennan's 'New Highway 51'(1940).

There's nothing mentioned in Dylan's eponymous debut LP about Jones or McClennan. However on the CD under the song ("C Jones") is indicated as the song's composer in parenthesis. The notes do mention the version on that album is "partially rewritten" by Dylan. And still just called "Highway 51". However, the liner notes (by Stacey Williams) opines the song, "is of a type sung by the Everly Brothers". Which made me think of the "Wake Up Little Susie" connection. Dylan was(and still?) a sponge of various music styles, one story being during his early days in New York, he befriended a guy with a widely eclectic collection of albums and old 78s which Dylan loved going through on his frequent visits to the guy. And once, when that guy with the records had to travel out of town for two weeks, the musically enamored Dylan, it was discovered, found a way to sneak into the guy's house so he could listen to his records for the two weeks his friend was out of town. Likely where he first heard the song. And too, where he probably first heard Roy Acuff's old "Freight Train Blues" which Dylan also covers on his debut LP. Whitefang
