Actually think either the latter came first and the lyrics in the Bland vocal version came later or vice-versa. Can't think of any right at the moment, but there are several times an instrumental tune became popular and sometime later someone added lyrics and a melody to it. And sometimes changed the title too. But not always. And too the reverse was done. I always thought Bobby Bland was an odd name for him as there was nothing bland about his sound and style. At closer investigation:
The Joe Scott instrumental: 'Soul Stretch',was recorded in Nashville,TN on April 22,1964.It would end up on 'The Soul of The Man' - Duke LP79 (1966).
'Reach Right Out' stems from a February 9-10,1965 recording sesion in Chicago,IL.
