By any other name

I once(many moons ago) wrote a tune about a guy playing one of these.  Since then learned it went by many other names, but at the time I only heard it referred to as a "crowd".  Also "croud"  and the more accurate "crwth".   Wasn't until the iNet did I ever really see or hear one.

Interesting. It looked like a chair back with a neck in there. Kind of cello like sound.
