He was a solid presence in a crazy group. There goes a true gentleman.

I've gone over this in other forums this morning. A good drummer, yes. But my favorite memory of him was that whenever The Stones would appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, as Jagger was going through his histrionics and the other band members were boppin' and shakin' to the tune they were playing, there sat Charlie, very still and relaxed, looking straight into the camera with a deadpanned, nonplussed and practically bored expression on his face. Rest In Peace Charlie. You've earned it. Whitefang

I'll never forget his interview comments on his initial playing with the Stones. Being more jazz oriented he was thrown off especially by Keith's playing "on the off" beats(typical of blues and some rock). Charlie always played great without over doing it. In '72 saw them live and was taken back by how great the drums were tuned and miked. There was more depth and quality of sound than any of the other name acts at the time. It was actually only later in the 70s and on that I heard just a couple other drummers get that quality of sound.

Not overdoing it is why jazz great BUDDY RICH once claimed in a Downbeat magazine interview that Ringo Starr was one of his favorite drummers. He would have probably said the same about Watts. But since whenever anybody brought up discussions about The Stones, most of the talk would center on either Jagger, Richards or Brian Jones' untimely death. Nobody ever talked about Watts' playing or methods. Not even other drummers. Whitefang
