Music, to me, is an essential part of my existence. As I go through the day, I'm either listening, playing, teaching or learning about this art form. Why is this so important to me? Music satisfies so many emotions it's difficult to find one that isn't addressed by music. If I'm stressed, I just put on some smooth jazz or some classical piece and immediately my blood pressure drops. If I'm sad, I can find a comedic song that makes me smile. If I'm feeling a little depressed, I can put a little Rockabilly and I feel much better. Then there's music that I just enjoy listening to in order to better understand how others have felt when faced with tough situations. For example, the blues bring back memories of the struggles for equal rights during the late 50's and 60's.
Since I'm rushed this morning, I'll continue this over the next few days. But I hope others will join in to discuss what music means to them.
Where did it start?
How Long has it continued?

Performing music satisfies much of my creative needs. Having spent a career in a more or less creative position as a Design Engineer, retirement left me needing a release of this trait. Music gives me that. Performing music is my heritage, my art, my "therapy", my release,my passion, and a solid connection to those around me, and many friends in the music world who sadly are no longer with me!!!!! I have performed to crowds of thousands, and to alone, just me and nature - high in the mountains with no "fans" but the surrounding lil' critters! It is my refuge in dark times, my joy in good times.

Can't do without it. Have to listen to music every day and I play guitar most days. Even if it is for 10 minutes or so-in fact I mostly play for about 40 minutes a day. I generally fall asleep to music at the end of the day too. If not then my mind fills with rubbish and I stay awake. I have a special sleep playlist too starting with The Beatles "Because" and then a group of my favourite songs. rarely do I get past song 4 so I switch them around.
There is always a song running through my head too. I cannot imagine life without it and luckily, with a built in music player in my head, I don't have to go without.

I cannot do without music either. It is an essential piece of my being. It is my bliss.

Whoops! It was Steve who mentioned the Beatles. I'm on the fly right now, and should spend more time reading, and typing.
