hi to everybody. I think that the relation between blues and jazz is the same that there's between blues and rock'n'roll. Blues was the genre that mixed with country and boogie generated rock'n'roll, that later developed in many different forms. So now when one is talking of rock music you can find extremely different things, from Frank Zappa to Death metal, from the Jefferson Airplane to the Tortoise. It's the same for jazz: blues is a foundation for jazz music, but from the beginning the other distintive elements were the improvisation and the swing rhythm. After that in the years it incorporated a lot of different elements, complex harmonies, influences from other genres from classical music to folk to rock music.

To me, blues is simpler and maybe more gutsy. I, IV, V progressions with a lot of 7ths, and some 9ths, 11ths, or 13ths thrown in for fun.
With jazz,I think about a lot of major 7ths and minor 7ths.
Another definition:
Jazz - when I was a kid, it was allowed in the house just so Grandma wasn't home.
Blues - not allowed in the house due to it's inherent evil characteristics. (You had wait until Mama wasn't home anyway.)
