I do a few Pops Staples and Staples Singers songs, and always wished I could get a sound lie Pops. Any suggestions on how to get his sound on an amp? Is it primarily a tremelo? My new Fender Excelsior captures some of that sound with the tremelo way up and the volume way down. I don't know how the volume and tone knobs on my guitar interplay with the amp, or if I need a reverb pedal. Any suggestions? link

Thanks, Jim: I may have someone do this for me at some time in the future.

Thanks, Jim: I may have someone do this for me at some time in the future. Seriously Jerry, you should be able to get Pop Staple's sound with the tremolo set at about mid-point. I believe the issue is that with the "bright" - "dark" switch, you are getting muddied tones that have you a bit concerned. I know that modding the NEW amp is not something you want to do, so maybe if you try a reverb pedal it would give you a better feel. Good luck.

Yeah, that's it. I figure I need a reverb pedal in combination with the tremolo. Thanks for posting this. Here's Blind Willie Johnson doing the song. link

What goes around comes around. I took my Fender Excelsior Pro tube amp to a shop today to have a tone control put in. The guy is a pleasure to talk to, and reasonably priced. When I mentioned that someone had posted a link to a blog that gives step by step instructions on how to replace the tone switch, he asked for a lnik. I gave him the link, and a link to this page. You'se all done good. Thanks!

Let's hear the amp now Jerry! I'd love to hear what the tone pot addition in lieu of the tone switch does.

I'll get it back this Friday, Jim. I also bought a Boss Legend Series FRV-1 Fender Reverb,. which I've just started fooling around with, plugged into my Fender Delux 112 amp. Lest I sound like I know what I'm talking about, rest assured, I don't. Once I get my new amp back and fool around it for awhile, if I can figure out how to use my portable studio recorder, I'll record something. Then, if I can figure out how to download it into the computer, I'll post something here. Don't hold your breath, my friend. This isn't my forte.

I was searching around Youtube and happened across this demo of the Excelsior. The guy does a nice job on showing various sounds and settings. The tremolo speeds are cool also.

Hey! Thanks so much for posting this! I haven't really had much of a chance to try mine out, as I took it in to have the toggle switch/bright/dark tone control replaced with a control knob. I am a real novice at this, so the video was an eye opener for me. I don't know how my Boss FRV-1 Fender Reverb will work with this amp, although I've heard nothing but good reviews, and it sounds great with my Fender Delux 112. Can I use the reverb pedal in combination with the tremolo feature, or do I need to use one or the other?
Thanks again for posting this, earleg!

You can use both together. Glad you liked the demo.
