So the day we did those videos, it was also the day the scene began changing. A cop ran us off the street where we'd played for 2 months. So we secured permission to play just a few feet up the street in that little notch from the business that is in that space. Later on during the week, since weather was not so good for street music, we visited with another store across the intersection and we may play out front there as well. Usually Saturdays and Sundays there's a kid who brings a little battery powered amp out and wanks jazz licks and cartoon themes for hours (at least we play actual songs!) but we're thinking early evenings may work for us there. Our first spot, down the street, I called the owner and she declined to give permission for us to play there because, even though the storefront is empty there is construction very close by. You know, liability issues. Oh well.
We are continuing our quest to find actual gigs too. Nothing solid as yet but that's sales for ya. You keep a good attitude, knock on doors, and after a "no" blizzard hopefully you get a few yeses.
The new little Regal slide guitar needs some tweaking yet and then we'll do some slide as well.

I don't get it...
How would construction "close by" that's not being done by her on her storefront be HER liability?

It is probably a matter of insurance liability for the refusal to allow folks to play on the business owners property. That is my guess.

Yes I think that's part of it. The music scene here is fairly recent too. I think probably the places that hire music don't want competition from us mere street performers. Fang there are 2 empty storefronts where a hotel is being built around them. That's where we were playing but at the time there was no ground broken. A construction company truck is sometimes parked on the street there. The owner is likely wanting to avoid any liability for injury on her property potentially from the work being done.

OK, I can see that if the work is being done on her property, but if only "nearby"( or if she also owns the property that hotel is being built on) in any case, I would suppose any liability for injury due to the construction being done would be the construction company's. Or, she could be some kind of snob that doesn't want you "bums" cluttering up her storefront. Whitefang

It's understandable but kind of the end of an era. We were out yesterday mostly to get some videos- which I messed up out of the gate. Love the learning curve! But one lady pointedly made a phone call while looking the stink eye at Jo. Our fave cop drove by several times. Kind of ruined the mood. We'll look at other options, in fact one place here lets people play on their stage during off hours for tips. Which kind of goes against a principal but we may do that. And just keep plugging at places for gigs, there are so many between in-town taverns and wineries just out of town.
The total sticker here about street playing is the definition of soliciting. Is a hat or open guitar case soliciting? One cop here says it is. Guess we'll go talk to the mayor and crew this week to clarify.

And since most attorneys claim to offer 30 minutes free consultation, you might try that as well. Ask if it's so and such. Whitefang

Possible. Since it's beginning to heat up more I think we'll concentrate more on actual gigs though.

We did lock 2 dates the other day. One is we get to use the stage at a place, big patio out front, lunch crowd, for tips only. So it's a rehearsal with maybe some tips and possibly the management will like what they hear and want to do business with us up the road. The other is a wine/cigar bar, patio gig, some pay and "legendary" tips, which I think we can do okay. We also did get permission to play this weekend just off the street so we're going to do that.
I also have some places to contact again and shake the tree a bit.
3 on the books right now, not bad but I want more!
Beat feet street.

A setback here but not what you may think. No cancer relapse or anything but Jo has been feeling so much better she's been taking on more tasks, like sweeping the floor, carrying my harp case as I get the other stuff moved to play on the street, sorting laundry, etc. Saturday we did some videos- which did not turn out since the separate battery for the mic on the camera was dying- afterwards she hopped in the truck- full size Nissan Titan- and drove up to the mailboxes to check for mail, and drove back. She did not use the little step we have to give her a boost in, and she did not adjust the seat up or steering wheel down. Which I suspect ended with badly strained or torn muscle in her mid back. I personally have been there and done that and the symptoms were very similar. Added to the equation is her sciatica and scoliosis too. We even went and played on the street Sunday for a while and she didn't feel any pain. Not until Sunday night, and then things began to change. Monday morning she was in excruciating pain and we had no painkillers here except aspirin. This was the worst pain she's felt in a very long time. I could tell. Hospice nurse got a call and she got into action. Another nurse was sent by Monday with meds and to check Jo out. Finally by late afternoon Jo was feeling better enough to drift off. Today was just fair. Regular nurse came in and assessed things and suggested we call her chiropractor so I did. Thursday morning we go in. Wednesday will be all rest for Jo. Maybe ice, heat, a massager, and definitely Ibuprofen and stronger meds to manage the pain. And just rest.
She feels so bad that we missed a tip gig yesterday and maybe we will miss the 19th gig in town depending on how she's healing up. That's 8 days away, pretty quick coming up. Of course the total #1 priority here is Jo's health. If we miss a date or two, no big deal, healing comes first by a mile.
She is a go getter and that's good mostly, and not so good this time. The pain is an incentive for her to ease up and I hope she relaxes enough to get better.
